The 3rd UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice brought together world leaders, civil society, scientists, and campaigners in a fast-moving, high-stakes week of diplomacy, announcements, and debate. But with more than 450 side events, packed plenary sessions, and parallel summits on finance and science, keeping up with the momentum was no small task.
Surfacing Intel Through Real-Time Listening, Tracking, and Monitoring
With a dedicated team on the ground and online, and listening tools in hand, we tracked plenary speeches, Ocean Action Panels, press briefings, and social media conversations as they happened. Our focus: key words, key issues, key announcements, and key conversations and quotes that mattered to our clients, coalition partners and community.
From new High Seas Treaty ratifications and calls for a deep-sea mining moratorium to 30×30, MPAs, and growing momentum for Indigenous knowledge, we worked to surface not just what was said, but what appeared most relevant to the priorities of the campaigns we were supporting.
This work contritubed to daily highlights and provided inputs that informed campaign strategies, rapid response advocacy, real-time social content, and media engagement throughout the week.
We’ve summarized it into a short case study on how this model worked in practice, including examples of how real-time tracking offered campaign teams opportunities to respond quickly, clarify narratives, correct misinformation, and coordinate more effectively across busy international coalitions.

To support campaigners and communicators in navigating the pace and volume of activity, we also produced a daily highlights series published on the OneOcean Flotilla website. These updates highlighted key announcements, social media trends, behind-the-scenes moments, and reflections from the Blue and Green Zones.

Looking Ahead
UNOC3 was a big moment, but not the end point. With the BBNJ Treaty nearing entry into force, deep-sea mining decisions looming, and 30×30 targets rapidly approaching, the momentum now moves into maintaining momentum, driving accountability and elevating the people and solutions at the heart of ocean action.
We’ll be building on this work to support partners ahead of the International Seabed Authority council meeting in July, the UN General Assembly in September, and COP30 in Belém, in November.
