Accelerating Ocean Action: The Power of Strategic Communication Roundtable Summary Report
On 10 June 2025, during the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, Communications INC convened a roundtable discussion at Ocean House on Accelerating Ocean Action: The Power of Strategic Ocean Communication. The event formed part of the Advancing Strategic Ocean Communication project and was delivered in collaboration with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation UK, the UN Ocean Decade Foundations Dialogue, and Global Optimism.
The roundtable brought together foundations, investors, scientists, communicators and civil society actors to explore how strategic communication can help accelerate progress for ocean action. This summary report highlights key priorities that arose during the discussion to accelerate the use of strategic communication to achieve ocean action:
- Reframe strategic communication as an investment, not a cost
- Invest in intelligence by designing communication as a two-way system
- Back the science of communication, not just the communication of science
- Focus on the fundamentals of effective communication
- Build knowledge ecosystems to connect science, policy, society and capital
- Use strategic communication to reposition the ocean from niche to necessary.
