Background

On Earth Day 2025, Antarctica: The Melting Silence premiered at Outernet London, one of the UK’s most visited cultural attractions. The immersive film experience transformed 23,000 square feet of floor-to-ceiling 25K resolution screens into a 360-degree Antarctic wilderness, placing visitors inside one of the most fragile and remote environments on Earth.

Directed by Alex Wolf and produced by Lookport in collaboration with Outernet, Communications INC, and over 60 campaigners, artists, scientists, and technologists, the installation immerses audiences in Antarctica’s awe-inspiring landscape and fragile ecosystems. Ultra high-resolution footage spans vast glaciers, aurora-lit skies, and underwater worlds teeming with krill, whose movements mirror the viewer’s own. Dramatic transitions reveal the mounting threats of melting ice and industrial fishing activities. Alongside animated data overlays and archival imagery, the story is amplified by a bespoke orchestral score by composer Nico Cartosio and enhanced by Outernet’s unique spatial sound system.

The result is a multi-sensory, emotionally charged experience and a powerful call to action: protect 30% of the Southern Ocean by 2030.

Supported by leading environmental organisations, including the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition, Antarctica2030, the Blue Nature Alliance, Greenpeace, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy, and WWF, the launch amplified growing public pressure on world leaders to designate marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Southern Ocean.

Objective

The initiative set out to raise public awareness of the threats facing Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, including climate change, industrial fishing, and pollution. By creating an emotional and accessible experience, the installation aims to connect audiences to a remote region they may never visit in person. It also seeks to inspire tangible action, encouraging visitors to sign a petition and call on governments to accelerate the designation of marine protected areas. At the same time, the project provides a creative, high-profile platform for environmental NGOs to unite behind a shared campaign message.

Approach and delivery

The project leverages art, technology, and advocacy in innovative ways to bring Antarctica’s story to life.

Visitors are immersed in a cinematic experience using Outernet’s 25K resolution wraparound screens and spatial audio, transporting them to the icy wilderness through powerful visuals, sound, and scale.

The narrative was shaped through a collaborative production process led by Lookport, Outernet, and Communications INC, working closely with scientists, artists, and campaigners to ensure both accuracy and impact. Rather than using a narrator, the story unfolds through a visual and musical arc to guide viewers from awe to urgency, ending in a call for action.

A bespoke orchestral score by composer Nico Cartosio, layered with over 150 instrumental tracks, amplifies the emotional tone, helping key messages about fragility and urgency land on a personal level.

The experience is fully integrated with a live campaign to protect the Southern Ocean, including a petition urging governments to take action and designate critical marine protected areas through CCAMLR (the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) – the International body responsible for managing marine protection in the region.

Beyond Outernet

Antarctica: The Melting Silence is more than an art installation; it is a model for how immersive technology can bridge the gap between distant ecosystems and global citizens. The project demonstrates how innovative storytelling can inspire awareness, empathy, and action at scale.

As part of a year-long campaign, the installation continues to drive public engagement, political momentum, and NGO collaboration in the run-up to key upcoming decision points at CCAMLR, COP30, and other international fora.

By combining science, art, and advocacy, Antarctica: The Melting Silence ensures that Antarctica’s story resonates far beyond its frozen borders, transforming silence into a collective call for protection. To build on its successful London debut, we are looking for additional platforms around the world to showcase this incredible installation and bring Antarctica closer to audiences worldwide.

Impact

1
Awareness and education
By premiering at Outernet, visited by millions annually, the project is reaching a broad public audience far beyond the traditional conservation sphere. The installation will remain open for a full year, extending its reach and influence.
2
Emotional engagement:
Visitors have described experiencing a profound sense of connection to Antarctica, often noting the installation made distant issues feel urgent and personal.
3
Amplifying advocacy
Environmental NGOs used the Earth Day launch as a rallying moment to push for the protection of Antarctica’s waters, reinforcing the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 (the goal of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework). NGO leaders’ voices, alongside those of explorers, journalists, and artists, connected policy objectives with public sentiment.
Working with Communications INC brought the creative and campaign sides of this project together. Their team understood how to balance emotional impact with scientific credibility, and ensured the story we told inside Outernet connected meaningfully with the global campaign to protect Antarctica.
